Norwegian project takes high-tech approach to spill management

Marine surveillance technology firm Aptomar, along with four Norway-focused oil and gas firms, and the Norwegian Coastal Administration, have teamed up in an industry project to improve oil spill detection and management.

Aptomar said that Eni Norge, Statoil, GDF Suez E&P Norge, OMV Norge and the Norwegian Coastal Administration have teamed up to “significantly strengthen technology functionality and communication infrastructure for offshore oil spill detection and management systems”.
“Traditionally, the oil spill segment has been somewhat product focused,” said CEO of Aptomar, Lars Solberg, adding that this joint industry project takes a “broader system approach” through better use of technology.

The project, running to the end of 2014, will see Aptomar provide remote, onshore control of its oil-spill management system. Then it will integrate various existing types of camera input – from remotely operated vehicles and platform supply vessels, to platforms and fishing vessels.

“Through utilising existing camera sources, and allowing all offshore vessels to tap into the same common operating picture, we will keep costs down while also improving safety,” said Mr Solberg.

The project will also see the development of an oil spill combating program integrated with a maritime simulator, and a local offshore communication network that will allow data sharing between all assets involved.
