In a decommissioning market valued at $30bn-$40bn, this spike in activity presents a vast opportunity for service providers in the Gulf of Mexico. On the flip side, increased regulatory burden, combined with the HSE issues and technical challenges that inherently accompany increased activity, will place heavy demands on both operators and contractors.

North sea operators face the challenge of ensuring that production from offshore assets is maximised, while also making installations safe and maintaining them; and thus extending their life. But given that over 50 % of the total population of fixed platforms on the UK OCS have exceeded the original design’s life, this is a huge challenge.

On the face of it, a used oil or gas platform might seem an attractive option both for buyers in need of cheaper structures and companies looking to offset some of their decommissioning costs.

Yet in the North Sea, unlike the Gulf of Mexico, the practice is barely heard of. Is demand for second hand platforms about to take off along with decommissioning in the next few years, or will it remain more or less anathema in the UK?
